Summary
Plaid’s June 2026 earnings announcement was disappointing because hiring increase has not resulted in revenue ramp, however, the company’s explanation is logical and consistent. I can give a benefit of doubt that the Plaid will accelerate revenue growth in the following quarters. The true test of company fundamentals will be the 2027 revenue guidance and the growth achieved in the first half of that year.

Plaid’s unexciting June 2026 earnings announcement and the following 20%+ stock price rise reminded me that one aspect of investing is discerning the difference between the market expectations and the company fundamentals: expectations were so low that the stock rather rose on bad news. The Q3 results showed inflated costs driven by hiring without a commensurate revenue increase. Below summarizes Plaid’s earnings guidance revision. Plaid is currently transitioning its fiscal year end from September to December, making the 12/26 guidance a 15-month period.

EBIT was revised downward due to accelerated hiring. While expected given rising labor costs, revenue guidance was raised by only Y223mn. This modest increase includes an estimated Y500mn contribution from the Cloudfit acquisition at the start of the fiscal year. This means the organic revenue growth was weaker than anticipated despite a higher-than-planned headcount.
The post-earnings rally was likely driven by a sentiment recovery in SaaS stocks in mid-July, management signaling a profit inflection point, and the announcement of a share repurchase program for up to 2.7% of the outstanding shares. As for the second point, management previously forecasted margin deterioration through FY 12/27 due to hiring, but now states that operating leverage will begin to materialize from next quarter because hiring is mostly complete. They attribute the current revenue lag to the six-to-nine-month training period for salespeople, long enterprise sales cycles, and a gradual ramp in enterprise spend. With hiring concluded and training underway, these additions are expected to drive top-line growth in 2027.
However, in my view, if the company hires based on underlying qualifications rather than immediate experience, the concept of “accelerating” hiring is hard to fathom. Did Plaid suddenly see a sea of candidates that fit its corporate culture? A definitive track record of stronger revenue growth is required for full conviction.
Speaking of revenue, Plaid’s ARR growth has been stagnant at around high-teens, which I deem low considering its small revenue base and large addressable market. I think the company can achieve a 25%-30% annual revenue growth for the next three years, if its go-to-market motion works properly. However, revenue from consulting projects, which I understand is a prelude to subscription revenue, have grown at a faster rate from a small base, potentially reflecting early returns on recent hiring.
I would like to see Plaid grow subscription revenue at 20% or higher in 2027. Enterprise sales take a while to change course, but momentum is sustainable once established, in my view. If Plaid accelerates subscription revenue, it will likely maintain that trajectory for several years. Consequently, Calendar Year Q3 and Q4 2026 results do not matter to my thesis (in short, Plaid can profitably scale revenue over five to ten years); the true test for the stock lies in the quality of 2027 guidance and the actual revenue acceleration delivered.
